There have been outbreaks of rabies around Bali and it is advised that some people vaccinate themselves if they are frequently amongst stray dogs. Post-exposure treatment, which consists of local nursing and care of the wound,
followed by vaccine therapy (with or without rabies immunoglobulin) should be initiated immediately.
BVMedical follows WHO guidelines for rabies vaccination schedules:
Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is given intramuscularly on day 0, 7, 21 or 28, and the booster is given a year after that.
For post exposure in previously vaccinated patients, the injections will be done on day 1 and 3; booster should be done 1 year and 5 years after for pre and post exposure.
For post exposure in previously un-vaccinated patients, the injections will be done on day 2 (2x injections), day 7 and day 21.
Rabies vaccine is available at BVMedical hospitals under the name ‘Verorab’, manufactured by Sanofi-Pasteur. This vaccine is approved by WHO for pre and post exposure vaccination and contains purified vero cell vaccine (PVRV).
